Marijuana Regulations and Licensing

Project Overview


On January 17, 2017 the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors adopted urgency interim ordinance No. 2017-03 prohibiting the cultivation, delivery and sale of marijuana and marijuana products in the unincorporated areas of Contra Costa County (excepting personal indoor grows of up to six plants as provided for in Proposition 64 also known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA)).

At the direction of the Board, the Department of Conservation and Development, in cooperation with various other County Departments, will begin the process of evaluating potential regulatory options and presenting those options to the Board of Supervisors. It is anticipated that a workshop on marijuana regulation will be held before the Board of Supervisors sometime in March of 2017 with the goal of adopting permanent regulations by the end of 2017.

Licensing: Contra Costa County does not currently issue licenses for cultivation, sale or delivery of marijuana. According to the provisions of Proposition 64 local jurisdictions should have permanent marijuana regulations in place prior to establishment of the state licensing program which is expected to be in place by early 2018.
