Racial Justice Task Force and Racial Justice Oversight Body

The creation of the 17-member Racial Justice Task Force (RJTF) was unanimously approved by the Board of Supervisors (BOS) on April 12, 2016. The mandate of the Task Force is as follows: 

1. Research and identify consensus measures within the County to reduce racial disparities in the criminal justice system; 

2. Plan and oversee implementation of the measures once identified; and

3. Report back to the Board of Supervisors on progress made toward reducing racial disparities within the criminal justice system.

On July 24, 2018, the Racial Justice Task Force presented its Final Report and Recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors. You can download what was presented to the Board:

Updates

July 24, 2018 

The County Board of Supervisors considered the final recommendations from the Racial Justice Task Force and adopted all the recommendations except Recommendations #18 and #19. 

September 18, 2018

Contra Costa County conducted a recruitment process for seven members from the community to serve a two-year term on the Racial Justice Oversight Body (RJOB).  The RJOB will be tasked with the periodic review and reporting of racial and ethnic disparities in the local criminal and juvenile justice systems, as well as the ongoing support and monitoring of efforts to implement recommendations to reduce the disparities.  The RJOB will meet on a quarterly basis.

February 6, 2020

The Racial Justice Oversight Body established the following three subcommittees which will meet on a monthly basis.

  • Community Engagement & Funding Subcommittee
  • Data Subcommittee
  • Diversion Subcommittee

June 22, 2020

The Public Protection Committee (PPC) accepted a report from the W. Haywood Burns Institute detailing the progress made to date by the Racial Justice Oversight Body.
