Census 2020

Despite the challenges of 2020, Contra Costa County had an extremely successful Census count. The County achieved the third highest Census 2020 self-response rate of all California counties with a rate of 77.4%. The County’s self-response rate also surpassed its Census 2010 rate of 72.1% by more than five points or a 5.3% increase.

The County’s high response rate is owed in large part to the work of community-based organizations, cities, agencies, community partners, and trusted messengers who helped reach Contra Costa residents, including hard-to-count populations.

Accomplishments

  • Increased self-response rate by more than five points than 2010

  • Third highest self-response rate of all CA counties

  • Second highest city self-response rate in state in Contra Costa County (Clayton)

  • Developed strong relationships with 67 organizations throughout the county

  • Increased participation of hard-to-count populations

  • Nearly all cities in the County surpassed their 2010 rates, and those that did not were within 1% of doing so

  • Strengthened regional relationships with other Bay Area counties and the State government.

All during a global pandemic, time of social unrest, and a dangerous fire season
