PROJECT OVERVIEW

Marsh Drive Bridge project mapThe Marsh Drive Bridge over the Walnut Creek Channel will be replaced by the Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) in collaboration with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the City of Concord. The existing bridge is structurally, seismically, and hydraulically inadequate. The project’s goal is to replace the existing bridge with a new one that meets current design standards and allows for safe public access. Construction on the project is expected to begin in June 2021, and it will take between 18 and 22 months to complete. The existing bridge was built in 1938 as a 6-span concrete slab bridge and was lengthened to a 10-span bridge in the 1960s.

To meet hydraulic standards, the bridge will be raised approximately seven feet with fewer supports in the channel. To improve safety, the proposed bridge will re-align Marsh Drive slightly to the north while utilizing a larger horizontal curve on the east. At each end of the bridge, approximately 350 to 500 linear feet of roadway approach work will be completed to improve the roadway alignment and horizontal curve. The proposed bridge will have two lanes of vehicular traffic (one in each direction) and a 10-foot wide separated bike and pedestrian facility on the south side of the bridge in its final configuration.
