Bureau of Investigations

Overview

The primary function of the Investigations Division is to provide investigative support in the prosecution of criminal cases. Currently, the Investigation Division consists of 21 sworn peace officers / investigators and four case preparation assistants. All five of our office locations in Contra Costa County are staffed with personnel from the Investigations Division. Our Investigations Division serves a vital role in the criminal justice process and significantly contributes to the high success that our office has consistently demonstrated in the prosecution of criminal cases.

Responsibilities

Our investigative staff works directly with deputy district attorneys and may be assigned to one of many specialized areas, including:

  • Domestic violence
  • Elder abuse
  • Fraud
  • High tech crime
  • Homicide
  • Juvenile
  • Narcotics
  • Political corruption
  • Sexual assault
  • The general trial team
  • Welfare fraud
  • White collar crime

The investigative unit also assists other law enforcement agencies with investigations, and investigates officer involved fatal incidents occurring within our jurisdiction.

Investigator Selection

Our investigators are selected through a very competitive process and are recruited from the most highly skilled men and women in the law enforcement profession. The investigators hired by our office must have prior police investigative experience, and have proven themselves as a respected professional in the criminal justice field.
