[ARCHIVED] Places to Cool and Heat Safety Tips

Hot weather is forecasted for Thursday, July 8, through Sunday, July 11. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for the East Bay Hills from 12 pm on Saturday through 10 pm on Sunday.

See locations in Contra Costa County to cool off during high heat this week. According to state guidelines, masks are required for everyone in cooling centers. 

Contra Costa County Libraries

See 20 library locations available as cooling centers. Visit ccclib.org for addresses and hours of operation, or call 1-800-984-4636 for assistance.

Antioch, Prewett in Antioch, Bay Point, Brentwood, Clayton, Concord, Danville, El Sobrante, Hercules, Lafayette, Martinez, Moraga, Oakley, Orinda, Pinole, Pittsburg, San Pablo, Dougherty Station in San Ramon, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek Library locations.

EHSD offices are open Thursday and Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm.

Water and face coverings will be available. Each office will also provide access to charging station kiosks in the public lobbies. Community members and staff who are inside or in close proximity to an EHSD cooling center must wear face coverings, regardless of vaccination status. Community members should NOT go to EHSD offices if exposed to or exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

Open Thursday and Friday, from 8:30 am to 7 pm. Open tentatively Saturday and Sunday, from 1 pm to 7 pm (call to confirm)

TIPS TO PREVENT heat-related symptoms: 

  • Drink water. Sip all day; do not wait until you are thirsty.
  • Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.
  • Limit physical activity and wear a hat outside, preferably with a wide brim.
  • Keep shades drawn, and blinds closed, but windows should be slightly open.
  • Open windows to cooling breezes in the evening.

You can also go to locations in the Bay Area with cooler temperatures or other locations with air conditioning. If you plan to visit the beach, exercise caution as there may be riptides.
