Contra Costa County Redistricting Update – California Releases Official Redistricting Data

Redistricting is the once-a-decade process of redrawing the boundaries for Supervisorial districts after the U.S. Census.

On September 20, 2021, the State of California released the California Redistricting Data. The Supervisorial Redistricting process must use the California Redistricting data, which is based on U.S. 2020 Census data and accounts for the population in state prison facilities to be counted at their last home address. The following summarizes the differences in Contra Costa County’s population between the 2020 Census data and the California Redistricting data.

                                    2020 Census                          CA Redistricting Data

Countywide:                 1,165,963                                1,168,064
District 1                         224,726                                   225,298
District 2                         243,565                                   243,779
District 3                         239,825                                   240,271
District 4                         229,384                                   229,658
District 5                         228,463                                   229,058

Based on the California Redistricting Data, equal population distribution is 233,613 per district. The current Supervisorial districts have a deviation of 7.9%.

The County may not publish any draft maps for three weeks after the release of the California Redistricting Data. However, members of the public may submit district map proposals or Communities of Interest using the DistrictR online mapping tool

Watch a video on how to draw a map with the online mapping tool. Submissions of proposed maps and Communities of Interest will be considered by the Board of Supervisors.

The County’s second Redistricting Public Hearing will be held on October 5, 2021 at 9 am. Learn more, including how you can provide input, at www.CoCoRedistricting.org
