[ARCHIVED] County Administration Building to Shine Light on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness

CCbuilding lights1 news flash

The County Administration Building will be lit up in teal, green, and pink lights tonight to shine a light on awareness of metastatic breast cancer research. Every year, more than 685,000 people worldwide die from metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4 or advanced breast cancer, for which there is no cure. This happens when cancer spreads beyond the breast to other parts of the body. If we can find a cure for MBC, we can end death from breast cancer.

  •     Approximately 30% of early-stage breast cancer survivors will have a recurrence as metastatic disease, even after completing successful treatment.
  •     Metastases can occur as early as several months to 25+ years after treatment.
  •     Only 22% of U.S. MBC patients live longer than 5 years, and only 11% live longer than 10 years.

Due to a lack of public knowledge about MBC compared with early-stage breast cancer, there are many widespread misperceptions. There is NO CURE for MBC.

Why green, teal, and pink?

  •  Green represents renewal, hope, and immortality
  • Teal symbolizes healing and spirituality
  • Pink signifies the metastatic cancer originated in the breast

On October 13th, National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day,  landmarks across all 50 U.S. states, as well as Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and many other countries will light up in the MBC awareness colors of teal, green, and pink, as part of the #LightUpMBC campaign.
